About Yarragon

THE HISTORY OF YARRAGON

Known initially as Waterloo, the town of Yarragon was officially granted its title in 1883. The town, which was once renowned for its booming timber industry and swampland, grew into a very successful pioneering town. The first shops opened in 1879, the first hotel commenced business in 1880 and then an incredible 43 years later the town was connected to electricity.
Devastating floods rocked Yarragon in 1934 followed by Black Friday bushfires in 1939. Many of the early pioneering families still have descendants living in Yarragon Village today proving what a loyal and attractive place the town is.

YARRAGON TODAY

Yarragon today is a ‘bustling’ town, known affectionately as the browsers delight! It is a village full to bursting with the unique and the unusual, the delicious and the delightful. Arts, crafts, textiles, galleries, books, antiques, fashion, homewares, lollies, coffee and cakes. Taste local cheeses and wines, smell freshly baked breads and pastries and savour all of the other delights the town has to offer. Dine alfresco or in air-conditioned comfort during the warmer months, or by a log fire when the days are cooler.
For the active person there is plenty to do. The local adventure company can take you bushwalking, canoeing, rock climbing, panning for gold etc.
With quality accommodation in the town you can spend your time relaxing with a spa, walking through the beautiful surrounds of the Strzelecki ranges, or just using your place of rest as a base to explore the beautiful surrounds of Yarragon Village, Gippsland Gourmet Country and Walhalla.
Yarragon welcomes you to taste, enjoy and experience the many attractions our Village has to offer.
